Prime for Life
Prime for Life is another evidence-based program that focuses on substance use prevention, including alcohol and cannabis, at the universal, selected, or indicated levels within the student body.
This program can be leveraged for educational purposes for universal prevention, or may be a step toward restorative justice for students who are in the midst of disciplinary action. The syllabus for the universal population is a 4.5-hr course designed to meet the needs of group participants without any known increased risk factors and most often used in secondary schools as a component of guidance, science, or health curriculum. The syllabi for selected populations are 8- and 10- hour course options designed for groups whose members have increased risk for problems, whereas the 12-, 16-, and 20-hour courses are designed for indicated groups whose members are actively making high-risk choices and may be facing legal charges. I can offer any of these course options that would be most practical for students in your school. The only cost associated with this course is for the participant workbooks, which Penobscot Bay Community Health Partnerships can help cover.
This program would pair nicely with educational units that address tobacco use prevention, cardiovascular health, the impact of tobacco or substance use on adolescent brain development, or strategies for making healthy decisions. These programs would help students have the opportunity to learn about the health risks of tobacco and substance use from a vetted professional in prevention with a master’s degree in public health who is endorsed by the state to work in schools.
